Warning Signs Your Teen is Doing Pot

Welcome to a secret view into the world of the net-generation. I love writing to you (maybe a little too much) so enjoy, stick around and be sure to tell me what you think...and, duh, get on my email list quick! (on the right, "subscribe via email"). Or subscribe to my RSS feed.

images-1.jpegI debated about putting up this post because I know I will anger some of my teen readers and clients who are very much a part of the teen pot culture and do not want to get busted. Unfortunately, pot is everywhere and many teens (some of my friends included) consider it very tame.

In fact, many of my friends vehemently refuse to smoke cigarettes, but love smoking weed. I want to explain the pot culture a bit for parents and give some warning signs–many of these are no different from when parents were teenagers, but it can never hurt to be reminded.

The Nicknames:
-Marijuana: MaryJ, Pot, Grass, Weed, Toke, Reefer, Hay, MaryJane

The Forms:
-I am no expert on this, but I do know that there are different qualities of weed (in leaf form) that you can buy. High quality weed, the more expensive kind has high levels of THC and gives a ‘good high.’ Also different kinds of weed can give different kinds of highs, quick high, long lasting, etc. Poor quality weed can give headaches because it can sometimes be laced with other substances.

The Methods and the Terms (a brief overview):
-Joint: Putting weed in rolling paper sometimes with a ‘filter’ made of cardboard, (looks like a handrolled cigarette).
-Spliff: Half tobacco, half weed joint usually in a modified cigarette or with rolling paper, often used to cover the smell of the marijuana.
-Bong: A long cylindrical glass jar where the marijuana smoke is inhaled from the canister.
-Pipe: There are small and big ones, it is basically a tobacco pipe for weed.
-Bubbler: A type of handblown glass pipe that has a ‘pouch’ for water so that the marijuana smoke filters through the water as it ‘bubbles.’
-Vaporizer: A way of smoking weed without smoke. This machine heats up the marijuana so just the THC is burned off in a vapor and inhaled. (minimal smell and better for the lungs).
-Edible Stuff: Brownies, cookies, I have seen truffle pasta made with the oil from cooked pot.
-Hookah: Many teens now go to cafes or bars where there are hookah’s with flavored, usually fruity tobacco. Teens can buy their own hookahs and add pot to the flavored tobacco, which covers the scent.
-“Medicinal:” If teens can get their hands on a marijuana prescription then they can eat marijuana energy bars, pills and chocolate infused pot.

The Warning Signs:
-If they come home smelling like: pot (obviously), cloves (clove cigarettes are often used to cover up the smell of pot), hookah tobacco (also used to cover up the smell of pot), lots of mint (many of my teen friends will literally shower in Listerine and gum before they get home), loads of perfume or cologne.

-If you find rolling papers, lighters, pot (obviously), little baggies, any type of hand-blown pipe/bubbler/contraption, lots of eye drops (my pot smoking friends always carry ice breakers and clear eyes to hide the bloodshot eyes) clove cigarettes, loose tobacco peelings…you might want to have a talk with them.
(the following warning signs have lots of other explanations, but I feel I should mention them especially if they are paired with any of the signs above)

-Blood shot eyes

-Odd behavior after being with friends like extended giggling, lack of eye contact, running upstairs ‘to bed,’ consuming large quantities of food…

-Extreme ups and downs: Some of the pot smokers I know smoke so often, that when they are not high their personalities are extremely different than when they do smoke. Of course, mood swings are a typical part of teen life, but if you notice shortened attention span and extreme changes in energy level or personality, this could be something to look into, whether it is pot or not.

-Unexplained loss of money, unexplained gain of money. Did you just give your kid his Christmas money and now it is all gone and there is nothing to show for it/explanation? How about if they have lots of spending money…too much spending money? There are many teens who will deal pot to their friends to make extra money on the side. (Interesting sidenote: One of my friends in High School used to sell his little brother’s urine to athletes to pass drug tests…he did very well for himself)

Please, please, please do not freak out if you find eye drops in your kids purse or pockets, there are many reasons why your teen might have some of the signs above, but I think it is just important for parents to be aware. To be honest, whether it is marijuana or not, many of these signs also might signify that someone needs help (mood swings, cigarettes, odd behavior, lack of attention). These things, drug related or not, should also be discussed with your teen.

I hope this post was helpful, soon to come:

Marijuana is a harmless drug, will be decriminalized everywhere in 10 years. Vanessa you need to stop trippin out about a harmless plant jesus christ put on this planet. Marijuana smokers are usually non violent offenders, take there pot away see what happens! LEGALIZE FREEDOM!

  • 2 mike // Jan 23, 2008 at 9:59 pm

    that was really funny.

  • 4 n/a // Mar 20, 2008 at 6:32 pm

ii cant believe we live in a world where guns are legal and a plant isnt, we made nature illegal, do you people realize how insane that is, weed is not bad, google, is marijuana bad for you and see what you get, and like the above poster said it will be decriminalized soon, now if you excuse me im going to go smoke a bowl…

  • 5 Mari // Mar 27, 2008 at 9:09 pm

I agree with n/a here. The only reason pot is illegal is because it can not be monitored like pharmaceutical drugs can. Even though some states allow medicinal marijuana you have to have a prescription. Pharmaceutical companies do not want independent agents dispensing a “drug” that will make them feel better naturally.
Marijuana grows from the ground. It’s not processed with chemicals.
I understand that it can become addictive, but the cases are very rare compared to over the counter drugs and prescriptions, they are far more dangerous for you in access.
I’ve heard of very little cases where violence was the result of pot selling, nor have I’ve seen news about people dying from it naturally (just by smoking it)
It has so many healing properties, rather than harmful. I’d be more at ease knowing my child is home chilled out on the couch smoking weed, than out somewhere I don’t know doing God knows what.
The government saying that marijuana is bad is just another way of keeping the public in line. It had nothing to do with weed being bad for anybody.

  • 6 n/a // Apr 1, 2008 at 7:50 pm

    mari,

weed is not addictive, you can however theoretically become addicted to anything, but what defines addictive is physically, and you do not go through withdrawal when quiting weed. also violence can be the result of pot selling but legalize it and the goes away. also to the person who wrote this article, the reason your friends refuse to touch cigarettes but smoke weed is because cigarettes are bad for you, weed isn’t. thc contains anti-tumors that actually protect you from lung cancer. while it is not good for your lungs it does not cause cancer. also vaporizer’s are not only better for the lungs, but they dont harm your lungs. lets not mask this here. you are the type of person who is the problem.

also common misconception it kills brain cells, ie: makes you dumb. I’m in highschool and smoke weed and get straight a’s. sometimes i go during lunch at school and still get a’s. other times i go before tests, and guess what? still get a’s.

poeple see through the lies, and open your minds…

There are so many teenagers out there smoking pot… TIP on myspace many comments can reveal, eg if they are smoking, taking drugs, drinking, etc. The role of a parent is not to hypercontrol, but to be a good role model for their child. They need to have conversations about people like Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan and how they have ruined their lives doing drugs. My opinion is that kids who are close to their families are less likely to do drugs. So, go to church often and have many family outings. They help a lot. Most good Christian children won’t do drugs, either. If your child is having mood issues, do not suspect drugs until you get them psychiatric help because typically it can be depression. Many drug addicts have depression and low self-esteem, so fixing those problems early can help reduce use of drugs.

  • 9 Dave // Apr 18, 2008 at 11:16 am

Most good Christian children will not smoke pot.

That’s funny, because I remember when I was fourteen the kids from the youth group was the place to get cannabis (I’ve noticed you’re all using it’s manufactured names, good call). A ‘religious’ upbringing doesn’t mean squat.

If keeping my kids away from cannabis means forcing an unfair religious doctrine on them, then I’ll hand my son the first bong toke.

  • 10 No one // Apr 18, 2008 at 11:45 am

I cant believe the nonsense people believe these days. It seems like most people have the same unreal, exaggerated ideas about pot… Do you have any idea how bad alcohol is? No. Most people dont because public opinion is often one’s own opinion. What makes you think pot is bad? the government says so, so it must be true… The same government encourages use ofe tobacco and alcohol, which are two of the most addictive and arguably the most harmful drugs known to mankind. Alcohol-
1)Known to have an addiction rate equal to cocaine
2)Is known to cause violence in certain individuals and is thus a social evil
3)Kills Brain cells, causes liver cirrhosis
    4) kills approximately 400,000 people a year in america alone
    5) Is an A1 class carcinogen
    Tobacco-
    1) Most addictive drug known to mankind with 90% addiction rate
    2) Kills 430,000 people a year in the US alone
    3) Known to cause cancer and a variety of other fun diseases such as emphysema, bronchitis etc..
    Marijuana-
    1) Arguably the oldest psychoactive used by man
2)Not a single reported death or hospital admission as a direct cause
    3) is known to have many beneficial effects
    4) No long term effects of any sort are reported after cessation of smoking

Please, let us open our minds and fight those things that are truly harmful to us. Let us educate our children about the real evils- tobacco and alcohol… Please don’t be worried if your child is smoking grass, he is doing no damage to himself. What a wonder it would be if pot were legal. Do you have any idea what good it would do to our society? Not one more tree would be cut for paper. Not one more drop of petroleum would have to be burnt again, as hemp would provide a endlessly renewable source of oil. Large numbers of psychotherapeutic drugs with horrifyingly harmful side effects such as valium and other dangerous anti depressants… Sometimes the most helpful things for mankind are given a bad name by those people who profit off the dirty polluting fossil fuels, the bullshit psychotherapeutic drugs, and off our limited forests… Anyone with half a brain sees the sorry state we are in. It makes me sad.

    Absolutely all.

  • 13 Dan // Apr 18, 2008 at 1:15 pm

I agree with many of the users comments.

    1. My father is a pastor and my mother is a librarian at a christian college and both of them have forced religion down my throat my entire life. A simple rebellion from their oppressive nature and squelching of open thoughts and ideas is one of the major reasons why I started to get into weed in the first place (which makes me sound like a little emo-whiner but I have long outgrown that phase). What I am saying is a “good christian upbringing” does not equate to a “good christian boy.”
    2. I entirely agree with the previous arguments of why marijuana should be decriminalized and do not wish to take the time to restate them. In summery though, it is almost impossible to scientifically dispute that marijuana is worse for you than alcohol or tobacco, both legal drugs.
    3. I am a strong believer of personal rights and a smaller federal government, so I wish they would please stay out of my personal life. What I put into my body is my own business.

  • 14 Nissen // Apr 18, 2008 at 1:44 pm

    Stop glorifying pot.

The problem with these discussions, is that both sides are filled with lies and propaganda. For instance, while I generally agree with “n/a”, I belive he is wrong on some issues.
Firstly, smoking hash causes cancer. It is actually more harmful than tobacco, if measured in grams. Obviously, no-one would smoke 20 joints a day, which is why it is generally viewed as less harmful.
Secondly, while it does not damage brain cells, it does make people dumb in a way other drugs, like alcohol, doesn’t. For about three days after smoking pot, your ability to learn is crippled. Therefore, people who smoke on a daily basis, or even just twice a week, has a greater inability to learn.
I agree that pot is somewhat harmless, and that it should be legalized. However, smoking it causes severe metal instability, which is why you smoke it, of cause. If you smoke a joint a day, sure you are abusing it, and it interferes with your everyday life. Just take care smoking it, and never before a workday.

  • 15 N/A // Apr 21, 2008 at 12:36 pm

Marijuana being legalized would keep the crime rates way down. I know this from experience… I’m a 19 year old who deals with this on a daily basis. I’m surrounded by it. And I’m not ashamed to say that I’m a proud pot smoker! My parents brought me up to be a good person. I make good grades, I have a good job, I have good morals, I just got into a great college, and my dad and I smoke bowls together every Friday night after we go out to dinner.

I won’t lie, smoking pot does make you a little slower than usual but it definitely doesn’t make you any dumber. Like lots drugs, Marijuana is more of a mental thing. If you just focus you can get control of yourself, do what you need to do, and STILL have the amazing high feeling.

In my personal opinion, I think that another reason the government doesn’t want pot to be legalized is because they know that a majority of people would smoke it. And when you smoke weed… you’re so much more peaceful. In conclusion - all the high people of the world will realize how fucked up the government is.

THAT’S ALL I HAVE TO SAY!
    Living, Loving, Toking! =)

AMEN to the post from APRIL 21. I 100% agree. Cannabis is indeed in the BIBLE!!! It is a huge part of the “annointing oil”. Look it up if you don;t believe it! Jesus created cannabis, and he also used it. Cannabis is something that everyone needs to get educated on. I have educated myself to the point where I am set on living for the LORD my GOD my Christ my SAVIOR. Thank you Lord for Blessing us with Cannabis.

Here is my point of view. I have never smoked or drank EVER. I live agreat life, with great family and friends. The only reason I believe people need drugs is if their life is not already interesting without it. Thankfully my life is. Weed, I hope will never be legalized. Weed afffects your mind. Something that can get you messed up can lead to unwanted consequences that may have the potential to be fatal.
Be Happy and Be Safe. :)

  • 21 Ken // May 7, 2008 at 10:14 pm

I found this post to be extremely funny. You honestly think your telling anyone anything they don’t already know. You obviously know very little about the “Pot Culture” as you call it.

  • 22 Vanessa // May 8, 2008 at 6:31 am

I think a lot of parents know nothing about the pot culture. If I know so little, do you care to enlighten us about what I have missed?

  • 23 Brad // Jun 12, 2008 at 4:44 pm

Yea the “Pot culture” is very high even in rural towns and kids who smoke it make up all stupid names to get around adults. Names like “The Devil’s lettuce” are used. But still people I’m my age don’t have a purpose for doing some say they like getting high but for most it the “cool” factor

  • 24 simone // Jun 20, 2008 at 9:39 am

this is a dangerous post beacuse teens can actually learn what pot is and want to try it…please take off all the info about what pot is…thanks Vanessa

  • 25 Simon // Jun 24, 2008 at 9:42 pm

Wow. Congratulations on this post. I bet you feel real proud of yourself. Who knows, maybe some parent will now have the evidence necessary to bust his or her child for smoking this evil plant. Thank God for you, you blessed human being.

Sarcasm aside, I don’t know why you would post something like this. You say you don’t want to turn off teenage readers who consume cannabis, you you post it anyway. Why would you encourage parents to become nosy and invade the privacy of their children? The way I look at it, if you have to resort to signs such as “bloodshot eyes,” you’re pretty desperate to get your kid in trouble. The way I see it, as long as your kid isn’t driving home, stumbling through the front door, and mumbling something about a shooting star that fell on the road in front of the car, you really shouldn’t worry about your child’s consumption of marijuana.

Oh, and I smoke cannabis several times a week, whenever I get the chance. It’s fun, it improves my mood, and if I have a physical chore to do like cleaning my room, mowing the lawn, or the like, it energizes me and makes the job at hand far less monotonous. I don’t care if it’s illegal or not, I’m going to smoke as much as I damn well please.

Thanks once again for the idiocy manifested in your blog entry.

  • 26 Smiley // Jul 28, 2008 at 8:25 pm

    He he.

extended giggling, running upstairs to bed and consuming large quantities of food.

    AWESOME!

  • 27 Jamie // Jul 29, 2008 at 9:15 am

I’m a dad who has admittedly smoked pot - probably less than 15 times in my life. Yeah, it’s basically harmless, yeah, it should probably be legalized, yeah, it generally affects people less than alcohol - I agree with all of this. However, regularly using any mind-altering substance (pot included) as a young adult (or adult for that matter) will limit your potential. Whether it’s athletic or academic, there will be some negative affects. I personally get most of my “highs” from some of the “ordinary” things in my life - an awesome kill on Halo 3, a sweet note from my 6 year old girl, or solving some complicated programming problem at work.

  • 28 jessica // Jul 29, 2008 at 7:47 pm

oh for the love of god leave your kids alone.

  • 29 collegegirl // Aug 14, 2008 at 7:12 am

    Just so you know:

    1. “Leaf form” is not really correct. Bud is best, leaf is not. If someone is smoking leaf, they are probably smoking cheap homegrown and have no other options.

    2. Bongs are not just made out of glass. Plastic, ceramic, and so forth are commonly used.

    3. I have smoked pot thousands of times with hundreds of people and never once was a “filter” ever used. Using a filter with pot is a hilarious concept.

    I’ll stop there.

  • 30 Fellow Stoner // Aug 26, 2008 at 5:48 am

What’s funny is that marijuana doesn’t actually kill brain cells, the THC is just absorbed in the fat around the cells, making your memory a little bad for a while. And I also love the fact that people always dramatize how marijane is bad, yet (and you’ve probably heard this before) CIGARETTES and ALCOHOL kills thousands of people, while herb hasn’t killed one person, EVER. It’s people like you that make this world such a nasty place, and your posts aren’t going to solve anything. The harder you try to keep them away, the more curious they get, and the more they want to try it. That’s just the way it is. And for one of the posts from April 21, 2008, where you’ve said ‘where all of the high people of the world will realize how fucked up the government is,’ I couldn’t've said it better myself(: That is one of the main reasons that it is illegal. They don’t have any reason to make it illegal, so they make up some BS about it being a ‘dangerous drug’ when it isn’t even either of those. Anyways, enough of my rants. LEGALIZE MARIJUANA!

  • 31 Egan // Aug 29, 2008 at 8:55 pm

honestly pot or alcohol is not a big problem at all we all used to be kids and do that stuff and kids will always do it but there is no way to stop it not the stupid 21 year old drinking age or anything so you might as well not mention anything on pot or alcohol because they are two great things that will never be not used in the lives of kids. You should focus on more important things like crack(that is an issue). I’m going to have a beer and a joint I’ve said my part-Egan

  • 32 Egan // Aug 29, 2008 at 9:03 pm

If you never smoked before lighten up. Sit back and relax you’ll see why kids love it is really one of lives pleasure. U look like you could use some. You’ll see why it’s loved. You should do somthing about cigarettes pot has never killed one person all it did to me was make me fat from munchies. Venenesa sit back and a joint rolled in purple haze paper you’ll love it.

  • 33 jon // Oct 28, 2008 at 8:38 pm

I’m a 14 year old high school student from canada and i can really relate to one post earlier that refered to taking tests high. I don’t trust myself to take a test high but doing math homework while buzzing actually helps me concentrate and think about the questions more creatively. I know parents who would kill if they knew their kid was smoking green on a friday night, but on the other hand i’ve smoked with one of my friends parents. I wouldnt take either of these approaches with my own kid. parents need to know the facts, and your little article (which a monkey could have written btw) isn’t helping. Marijuana is one of the most chemically benign substances known to mankind while cigarettes and alcohol are nothing less than poison. I’m all for parents and kids having an honest discussion about marijuana, but this is nearly impossible as the parents have probably been fully indocrinated by this nanny state. (the only reason marijuana is illegal is because it is a weed, and therefore impossible to tax. Even if it was possible to tax, marijuana prohibition employs way to many people, the government would never deny themselves money like that, not to mention all the property they get to seize from non-violent individuals who will then become property of the prison-industrial complex) Marijuana is the #1 cash crop in the US, right above corn. It clearly doesnt matter whether it is legal, or how your mommy and daddy feel about it. Marijuana has been a part of civilization since forever, it is first mentioned as a sacred plant in the sanscrit. Marijuana is a gift from god and a personal choice. If your a parent and you read this blog, you need some serious help.

P.S. If you haven’t had at least one truly memorable potsmoking experience then your not qualified to write this article. I think you should get blazed and try again :)

are you kidding me i am a 23 year old male who smokes pot when ever i do not have to work the next day so not to much but so what if someone smoke pot the worst thing it does to you is make you go to your fridge and eat a bowl of ice cream it has saved my marriage if there was no weed in my life i would stress out over my car loan, rent, cell phone, internet, the list goes on and on and i have never missed a payment so dont think that pot heads are lazy im stoned right now and hey if i want to spend $45-60 a month ($12/gram) its are choice lay of the weed fight half the people and mothers out there who fight against weed are wineys that right the ladys who act perfect around the pta and stuff then slam a bottle of red wine when the kids go to bed keep smoking people

  • 35 Carina // Nov 3, 2008 at 9:46 am

wow. if the kid wants to smoke let him smoke.
it just depends how much and how often.
If they are doing it once in a while, then it’s fine, but if it gets to then point that they’re smoking everyday it’s interfering with their work, and everyday life, then that’s when you should get a bit worried.
but be realistic here. 1 in 5 teens have tried it.
it also is good for anorexics because it makes them hungry, for women because it stops menstrual pain, for stress cause it’s calming.
Put a anger management victim on it and they’ll be fine in no time. I’ve had some friends do it the night before a big exam, and they had a great exam. Why? Cause they had the best sleep of their life, and they were calm physically and mentally.
there are some great things about weed sometimes.

  • 36 Joe-Don // Nov 7, 2008 at 2:50 pm

I was raised to believe cannabis was a demon weed, with reefer madness. I then learned to think objectively and critically and researched it for myself. I found out that:
    1. Its smoke has some bad stuff in it, as any smoke does but that it does not cause lung cancer at all. This was from a UCLA study which used thousands of test subjects.
    2. It has thousands of practical uses, but the other benefits are amazing as well. Most if not all music and art is inspired either partly or fully from cannabis use. Dr. Carl Sagan even used it to see his physics problems from other perspectives and solve them, and gain new insights or ideas for the space programme.
    3. It was not banned for the reasons you may think. It was banned because of racism against Mexicans and blacks, you can verify that yourself with research. Or, watch the documentary ‘Grass’ and fact check it, I have.
    4. Prohibition makes criminals rich, it does not reduce drug use at all.
    5. Lying to teens and telling them it’s evil does not work. They soon find out it’s not that bad, and then believe that perhaps really destructive drugs like meth might not be so bad. Ie., you lose their trust over pot.

Weeds supposed to chill you out, make you feel good and socialize more.) i can see why some people fear stuff like mental changes from pot because its all natural, nothing that cannot be controlled with a simple thought or action.(unlike alcohol, witch i love 2 but yes is bad when mixed with herb if you dont want to feel smashed:-D) people just dont think, maybe cause they are unexperianced with smoking or just there personallity or are just immature who knows only you know whats going on in your head. If ur that botherd you wouldnt smoke it still, you’d quit. All that you have to remember is if u find out your child, loved one, whoever is smoking pot regulary they are doing it because they enjoy it not because ther’e drug addicts.
Sorry if this seems abit rushed gota go. But i think every1 who wants to smoke pot should be allowed and those who dont then dont, its your loss mate simple as, just dont judge it, u dont know! Legalize ganja! And let the world float!
