What causes aniridia eye?
Aniridia is caused by mutations in the PAX6 gene. The PAX6 gene provides instructions for making a protein that is involved in the early development of the eyes, brain and spinal cord (central nervous system), and the pancreas.
Can aniridia cause blindness?
These problems can cause many symptoms, including: Blurred vision. Blindness in part of the field of vision. Flashes of light in the eye.
Can aniridia be treated?
Treatment of aniridia is usually directed at improving and preserving vision. Drugs or surgery may be helpful for glaucoma and/or cataracts. Contact lenses may be beneficial in some cases.
